Modern living

Contemporary, clean lines, a bold colour palette and the timeless elegance of hardwood flooring come together to create a modern living space.

For this light and airy space, we were commissioned to create matching, built-in alcove storage to house a 55″ television and AV equipment, along with areas for display and books. The cabinetry needed to work to the scale of the space and contemporary styling was preferred to suit the room.

After consultation with our clients, a clean, slab door design with minimal detailing was developed incorporating ventilated cabinetry (to ensure the enclosed equipment wouldn’t overheat), concealed soft-close mechanisms on the base cabinets and sliding doors to house the television – a much less obtrusive alternative to traditional hinged doors. (The challenge was then set to calculate the exacting specification of these doors which had to sit comfortably within the available alcove space while accommodating the dimensions of the enclosed television and keeping proportions aesthetically pleasing!)

The designs were finished with a bold colour palette (Little Greene, Jack Black), simple crown moulding and round Henley handles in satin brass to create statement furniture which would help define the room.

Finally, elevating the scheme and making the most of the abundance of natural light, an engineered oak plank floor with a light finish was fitted throughout to create a point of contrast with the striking monochrome cabinetry.
