Handsome hardwood flooring

Posted by Bath Bespoke on 20 April 2021

This magnificent Grade II listed Georgian villa deserved only the best flooring.

Built in the early 19th-century and substantially remodelled decades later, this handsome, three-storey property on the outskirts of Bath encompassed spacious, light-filled rooms boasting exquisite late 19th-century plasterwork and expansive windows looking out over the landscaped gardens and countryside beyond.

The property’s existing flooring didn’t do justice to the 19th-century heritage, proportion and exceptional period detailing found within the house.

Working with our clients on a flooring scheme that would unify the ground floor reception rooms, drawing room, bar and kitchen, we created a larger format, herringbone parquet floor in European oak to elevate the scheme with an elegant design that would complement the character of the property. On the lower-ground floor, planks of the same oak were used, introducing a more informal finish to some of the behind-the-scenes rooms within the property including the gym and shower room.

Light character grade timber was used throughout to showcase the natural beauty of the wood and introduce an element of textural character. All the timber was finished in an environmentally friendly, VOC and solvent-free oil coating which both protects the wood and catches the light crossing the wood grain beautifully, finishing these rooms with a flooring design fit for its splendid surroundings.
