An Exceptional Classic Kitchen

Handcrafted with care and designed with breath-taking attention to detail, this classic kitchen combines contemporary elegance with period detailing to seamlessly blend with its listed architectural surroundings.

This exceptional kitchen was founded on our clients’ love for spending time in the space as the heart of the home. A shared passion for antiques, art and gathering friends and family together around a homemade meal became the starting point…

Architectural inspiration

The client’s renovation of the building provided inspiration for the kitchen, with a plethora of discoveries unearthed after over two years of excavations revealed enough architectural detail of the original building to influence the layout, flow and a large proportion of the joinery and architectural detail within the space.

Flagstone flooring found beneath 12″ of rubble and concrete was lovingly restored to reintroduce its inimitable character and the fire surround discovered provided a focal point to work from.

Timeless elegance

The aim was timeless elegance – a sympathetic, subtly grand space in keeping with the building and its character. Authenticity in design is crucial in period properties to keep the aesthetic narrative consistent and a fitted kitchen clearly wouldn’t have been appropriate, so a layout utilising freestanding furniture casting out from the unearthed fire surround began to take shape.

This kitchen was to be a space in which to create (and to enjoy the time spent creating) and the layout needed to facilitate these activities with ease; accordingly, the space was designed to suit the client’s practical needs – storage was key and a variety of cabinet and appliance arrangements were tried and tested to ensure the kitchen was as easy as possible to use and everything was either to hand or a logical step away. A large fire surround housed two range cookers and storage, drawers, shelves and cabinets were all closely considered (down to shelf heights to suit particular ingredients and a generous allocation of power sockets within the kitchen dresser), allowing uncompromising, intelligent storage solutions to be implemented throughout.

A scheme to work in harmony with the grandeur and proportions of its surroundings, yet not dominate the space, demanded a considered approach to design with furniture that took its cue from the architectural surroundings. Original door mouldings were replicated to tie furniture into the property’s heritage, cabinetry was finished in Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue and bespoke, cast bronze hinges, ironmongery and shelves were commissioned to elevate the space with distinctive attention to detail.

Working in close partnership with our client we were able to bring almost all of their ambitious ideas to life for this extraordinary space. Compromise on quality, finish or installation was not an option, and the detailed, bespoke nature of this project demanded unrivalled attention to detail, commitment to excellence and the expertise and experience to deal with the inevitable challenges that emerged along the way. The end result speaks for itself. (Even if we do say so ourselves…)
