An entire apartment renovation

Design, build and installation: a top-to-toe apartment renovation

The sloping floors and wonky walls care of the Georgian building era in this second-floor apartment of a Grade II-Listed crescent townhouse in Bath, UK necessiated an entire overhaul and renovation of the space. So, we took the interior back to the barebones and started again.

Preserving the building’s past was key, and modern detailing was interwoven with original architectural features, alongside an emphasis on the exceptional natural light, tactile materials and optimising the generous Georgian proportions.

After stripping the property back it became clear that the flooring throughout required levelling to rectify a signifcant slope; joists were updated and replaced and 200mm oak plank flooring was laid throughout along with new bespoke skirting boards, copied by our machinists to match the original elsewhere in the building.

Bespoke, fitted furniture was then designed to compliment the open plan layout of the apartment, optimising storage solutions wherever possible.

The entrance hall featured a low line of bespoke joinery to provide neat storage for shoes and boots and a wall of deep-set bookshelves utilising the high ceilings and generous bedroom storage was introduced behind a wall of clean-lined wardrobes with sprung-loaded clothes rails.

The kitchen focused on ease of use as a high priority – clean lines of workspace, storage and shelving were paired with high quality materials – while the modern bathroom was finished with elegant panelling and oak shelving.

Expansive sash windows spanning the length of the living space were renovated and a contemporary feature fireplace and oak alcove bookcase were introduced to bring modern character and practical storage to the space. Finally, the walls and ceilings were repaired with lime plaster, allowing them to continue to breathe, and finished in a soft grey shade blending harmoniously with the period mouldings and wide panelled doors.
