Classic Kitchen in Country House
A classic kitchen with well-considered storage solutions
We were approached by the owners of this beautiful country house in Colerne, Wiltshire and asked to design and craft a kitchen for them. Their home was surrounded by open countryside, and after much discussion the family settled on a classic style of kitchen that complemented the rest of their gorgeous home.
The island
The focal point of the kitchen is a large solid wood painted island, with a solid walnut top, which has been finished in Invisible Greene from the Little Greene Paint Company. It features four drawers on either side, each made to a custom size to suit specific storage requirements. Crown cut walnut cabinets, with solid walnut dovetailed drawers and Accoya door frames, run along either side of the room. These have been finished in Ha’Penny White from Colourtrend’s historic colour collection, and a clear matt natural oil which is free of VOC’s. The right-hand side features an integrated Fisher and Paykel fridge freezer, with trick hinges to allow for a flush finish with the cabinets, and an under-mounted Shaws of Darwen sink, while the left-hand side offers space for prepping and cooking food with its Everhot range cooker and a wall-mounted pot filler tap from Perrin & Rowe.
The sink area
We designed several clever storage solutions around the sink area, including a triple drawer cabinet, a refuse cabinet, as well as two extra tall larder cabinets with big glass fronted drawers, around the fridge, with a double cabinet above. The cabinets, which feature cock beaded frames and ovolo moulding on the doors, have been finished with Armac Martin chrome handles. We created secret magnet catches using walnut and rare earth magnets to create a more uniform look within the cabinets. The little details make all the difference.
Cooking and storage
The cooking area features a black Everhot range cooker with stone splash back and cabinets fitted with a 30mm stone countertop with ogee edge. The wall mounted pot filler tap from Perrin & Rowe is a fantastic aid when cooking, while the custom-designed pelmet around the cooker features an integrated extractor fan and spotlights. The cabinets have been custom designed and crafted for specific functions. These include bespoke cutlery drawer dividing inserts, which are interchangeable, deep drawers and cupboards for pots and pans, and tall cabinets with internal shelving for drinks and glassware.
This project was both challenging but incredibly rewarding. It was important to craft the right storage solutions for this family and after much consideration and design work we were able to create something that our clients and team were proud of. A credit to everyone involved and also many thanks to photographer Sean Ebsworth Barnes.
