Classic Styles with Contemporary Character

The grand proportions and exquisite detailing in this beautiful 19th-century family home deserved only the best woodwork to breathe new life into the property.

This stunning 19th century, five bed detached property had been well-loved and renovated to a high standard by the previous owners. Recently purchased by our clients, we were commissioned to bring together contemporary character with traditional detailing in their new home.

This was an exciting project to tackle within a distinctive property boasting splendid proportions, plenty of period detailing and generous rooms.

Our clients came to us for ideas and inspiration for storage solutions throughout their home that would introduce their own style and character. This developed into consideration of flooring after it became clear that an updated wooden floor could transform the space.

We worked in partnership with our clients to introduce classic designs that would work in harmony with the 19th-century character of the property whilst also injecting contemporary styling.

Herringbone, parquet flooring.

The property’s existing flooring didn’t do justice to the 19th-century heritage, proportion and exceptional period detailing found within the house.

Working with our clients on a flooring scheme that would unify the ground floor, we created a larger format, herringbone parquet floor in oak to unify the space and elevate the scheme with an elegant design that would complement the character of the property.

The floor was finished in a rich, dark stain with an environmentally-friendly, entirely VOC free oil which catches the light crossing the wood grain beautifully, finishing the stunning rooms with a flooring design in proportion with the period skirting and cornice.

A studious space, bespoke boot room and banquette seating.

A home office places heavy emphasis on the natural texture and warmth of wood to create a traditional, studious atmosphere with a fitted desk and bookcase alongside cabinetry housing audio-visual equipment in stained oak. An oval table with custom-designed turned legs provides space to spread out paperwork.

A corner space was given a practical purpose with a handcrafted boot room finished in Inchyre Blue featuring a hat shelf, coat hooks, bench seating and useful shoe storage. The same clean design scheme with a nod to classical styling used for this practical boot room was also applied to banquette seating (which doubles up as additional storage) finished in Worsted in the playroom.

His-and-hers dressing room and bedroom wardrobes.

This his-and-hers dressing room in oak was designed to provide generous storage alongside a built-in dressing table flooded with natural light. Fitted cabinetry in oak with open hanging storage space allows the contents to be easily viewed and accessed, combined drawers with cut-out handles and a mirrored wardrobe to hide additional clutter.

In two of the bedrooms, classically styled wardrobes finished in Purbeck Stone provided much-needed bedroom storage whilst acknowledging the property’s heritage in their design. A custom-made dressing table to match was added to one bedroom to finish the room with further practical storage.
