Our aim was to create a beautiful shaker kitchen which fused the necessities of a functional family space and great design.
Our brief for this classic framed shaker kitchen in Larkhall, Bath was to create a functional family space which joined the dining and living areas of the lower ground floor. Lower ground floors are generally very good locations for kitchens, but can present challenges – space and light being the main ones.
We shared lots of mood images with our client, who were due the arrival of a little one. The kitchen needed to be ‘toddler proof’ but also elegant. We specified solid hardwood frames and doors, with crown cut oak on a birch ply core for the carcasses. Hardwood is the ideal choice for framed kitchens – very tough and paints beautifully for the tight grain. Birch ply faced with real oak is a very stable and water resistant choice, and leaving the birch core exposed on the edges shows this high end material off.
The finish was key here, so we applied four coats of our most durable clear matt lacquer to the carcasses and all oak. The painted wood (finished in Farrow and Ball Monkey Puzzle) was finished with our ‘Anti-Scratch’ coating, and a final coat brushed on for classic effect.
We fabricated the Corian worktops in house – choosing white with our client to help with the light and to contrast the green and the oak cabinetry.
We enjoyed designing and making the classic oak fronted drawers, with ‘Through Dovetail’ joints showing. A very functional larder cabinet allowed for additional work surface where the kettle and toaster could be hidden behind closed doors.
We also designed and manufactured bespoke under stair storage in a style to complement the new kitchen. We were invited back to make the doors and other furniture for this very pretty family home. Currently being enjoyed by the parents and happy little toddler.
