Playful practicality

Posted by Bath Bespoke on 1 March 2019

A space to make and play. One of our first 2019 projects, this kids craft station and bookcase was designed with a playful aesthetic in mind and handcrafted from birch-ply.

Making the most of a light, bright, expansive hallway space, the brief was to create an engaging and fun area for kids to make and play, alongside providing library storage.

The conversation began with pegboard shelving and a soft, natural colour palette and evolved to encompass generous storage for playroom favourites. Pegboard shelves allow flexibility and fun whilst keeping crafting essentials easily accessible, a top line of generous cupboards provide ample storage for games and toys and base cupboardsĀ (housing wooden crate drawers hidden behind sliding doors) are ready for an array of craft materials.

Meanwhile, a library bookcase floats seamlessly up the staircase, optimising the available space with a random yet balanced design of cubby-holes to help bring order to an extensive collection of fiction and non-fiction books.

All handcrafted from birch-ply to bring a natural, calming atmosphere, in harmony with the garden and outdoor landscape visible through adjacent glass garden doors and a striking atrium roof overhead, this is a clean, pared-back piece of furniture designed with playful practicality in mind.
