Oak Framed Building for Hartley Farm

Project Overview

We enjoy a brilliant working relationship with the Bowles family and all at Hartley Farm and we love working on the projects here.

An amazing build that allows cafe customers to sit and enjoy the peaceful countryside.

A few years ago we were asked by Hartley Farm to craft an extension to their coffee shop. The extension would form a new seating and dining area for customers to enjoy. We’d already built the new kitchen and display furniture within the farm shop, and it was great to be asked back to build the new oak framed building.

This was a really enjoyable and rewarding build that now allows cafe customers to sit and enjoy the peaceful countryside surrounding the farm. The construction itself took about eight weeks and consisted of very simple materials fresh sawn European oak for the structure, high performance thermal glass for the walls, softwood for the internal roof, insulation and tin on top. The juxtaposition of the traditional framing and the contemporary glass is a real joy, especially close up.

Oak naturally weathers on the outside and retains its light brown colour internally. We left the pegs proud in the traditional way so that we can adjust them years down the line and close the joints that open up as the timber dries out. It’s an ancient building technique that results in beautiful and strong buildings that can be enjoyed for centuries.

Not one screw was used in the construction of the building.
