Traditional Kitchen in Listed Property

A unique kitchen in a gorgeous Grade II* listed property

In 2017, we were commissioned by Joel Bugg Furniture & Spaces to make the furniture for its latest project with Bath architects Simon Morray-Jones. The project involved creating a kitchen and dining room space for their client who lived in a gorgeous Grade II* listed property.

Joel is a valued client of ours and we love making his furniture. He approached us about this project in Beckington, near Bath and we were immediately interested. There was a level of detail and proportion in the designs which we knew would be at once challenging and rewarding. The proportions of the furniture were executed beautifully in Joel’s concept design and the mouldings specified were unique. The material specification of Accoya and tulip, with birch ply cabinets was our preferred and best possible combination.

The Dining Room

Working closely with his client, Joel designed the whole space from the cabinetry right to the ironmongery that graces the furniture. A truly bespoke project. Of the design, he said: “Being mindful of this building’s age and history, through our research, our design details reflect the period of the property with furniture mouldings and panelling evocative of its past.” From Joel’s designs, we then made our own working drawings, liaising closely with Joel on every detail.

Due to the limitations that come with the status of this listed building, Joel had to design a kitchen and dining room that didn’t impinge on the integrity of the building but that also fulfilled a functional purpose. Due to the limited size of the kitchen area, he designed an ‘overflow’ servery within the dining room. This was then furnished with a wine fridge, dishwasher, sink and storage. The kitchen was furnished with an island, floor cabinets and a range cooker, finished with a Carrera marble worktop. We finished by hand painting the cabinetry in Farrow and Ball Railings.

The Kitchen

Joel’s projects are never straightforward but no piece of very fine furniture ever is. The results, with our hand-painted finish inside and out, were really spectacular and the kitchen did justice to the beautiful period home and put lots of smiles on the faces of the clients, ours and importantly Joel’s!
