Draught Proofing

What We Do

Sash window draught-proofing.

Draught-proofing is often the most effective way to improve the comfort and thermal performance of traditional sash windows. By reducing unwanted air movement around the window, it helps retain heat, minimise rattles and improve overall efficiency, all without altering the character of the building.

The design of a sash window relies on carefully controlled gaps between the moving sashes and the surrounding frame. While this allows the windows to operate smoothly, many older windows were built without any form of sealing, resulting in draughts, heat loss and unnecessary noise.

Our draught-proofing system incorporates discreet brushes and seals fitted within the sash box and window frame. Once installed, these create an effective barrier against draughts while still allowing the window to operate as intended. The result is a quieter, more comfortable home, improved energy efficiency and better protection against damp and condensation.

Double Glazing

Upgrading existing sash windows.

Improving the thermal performance of period properties need not come at the expense of their character. By upgrading existing sash windows with slimline double glazing and discreet draught-proofing, it is possible to improve comfort, reduce energy loss and minimise external noise, while retaining the appearance that makes traditional windows so distinctive.

In many cases, we can replace the sashes themselves while retaining the original window boxes, avoiding unnecessary disruption to surrounding plasterwork and architectural features. Using specialist slimline glazing units, we are able to preserve traditional sightlines and detailing, including authentic glazing bars and mouldings, making them well suited to listed buildings and conservation areas.

Alongside glazing upgrades, we can install draught-proofing systems, rebalance window weights, restore or replace period ironmongery and repair existing timber window boxes where required. The result is a sash window that performs to modern standards while remaining true to the character of the building.

New Sashes for Existing Boxes

Where the original sash box remains in good condition, replacing the sashes can be an effective way to improve performance while preserving the character of the window and minimising disruption to the surrounding fabric of the building.

By retaining the existing box frame, we can upgrade worn or inefficient sash windows without disturbing internal plasterwork or original architectural details. This approach is particularly well suited to period properties where preservation is a priority.
